The Mantis BS1 B Floor Lamp by Bernard Schottlander, first designed in England in 1951, is reissued by DCW éditions. Artist and engineer, Schottlander perfected a pivot and counterweight system of fine, flexible metal rods. Inspired by Alexander Calder's mobiles, his lights play on balance and seem to defy gravity.

The BS1 B sits on a round metal base. The counterweighted arm rotates 360 degrees and tilts into four positions, with a steel body and aluminium shade. A reading lamp for a living room or study.

About the Brand: DCW Editions

DCW éditions is a french company, founded in 2008 by Philippe Cazer and Frédéric Winkler. They first produced the Lampe Gras, created in 1921 by the inventor Bernard-Albon Gras, first articulated lamp of the history, much lauded at the time by Le Corbusier.

2013 saw them bring out the Mantis lamps of British designer Bernard Schottlander. The Mantis were created in 1951 as an homage to Alexander Calder. DCW Éditions then released the singular Here Comes the Sun, designed by Bertrand Balas in 1970.

As the past is nothing without the future, DCW innovated by editing for instance In the Tube, specially designed by world renowned architect Dominique Perrault and his partner Gaëlle Lauriot-Prévost.

About the Designer: Bernard Schottlander

Born in 1924 in Mainz, Germany, Bernard Schottlander arrived in England in 1939. During the war, he worked in structural engineering as a welder. He then took sculpture classes at Leeds College of Art, and later, thanks to a grant from the Anglo-French Art Centre in St John's Wood, he studied sculpture for a year in London. His training as a welder would play a significant role in his work.
