The Edit with Simone Haag

With over a decade of experience in the interior-decoration industry, Simone Haag is recognised as one of Australia’s leading designers. Her studio curates vintage pieces, contemporary design and the personal narratives of her clients to create warm, layered spaces that reflect character, and the way people live. In The Edit, Simone shares her favourite pieces from the In Good Company collection, each selected for its resonance with her design language.

Good design, for me, is about creating an emotional connection rather than following what’s current — and that feeling will always be relevant.

What is your starting point for a new project?

For me, every project begins with the client, understanding the way they live and what they love, and being completely open to the potential for unexpected ideas to emerge. I spend time understanding how people want to
feel in their space, and then I start curating pieces and layering mood boards with ideas that have formed from hearing their individual story. Often, it’s a single object — a vintage chair, a ceramic, a piece of art — that sets the tone for the rest. I like the idea of creating a story that feels collected over time rather than composed all at once.

Simone’s selections reflect her signature approach: pieces that are layered, timeless, and deeply attuned to personality. From outdoor tables designed for shared experiences, to sculptural chairs meant to linger in, each piece compliments her belief in interiors that act as homes for life.

Could you share your connection to two of your selections?

The Pium Pendant has this beautiful balance of delicacy and presence - it feels almost feather-light, yet anchors a room with such quiet confidence. In my recent Sydney project, I loved how it became the gentle hero above the dining table, casting a soft, inviting glow that draws people in.”

“I love how the Masculo strikes that rare balance between sculptural statement and everyday comfort. It’s design with personality - strong, graceful, and quietly confident. It’s a chair you can linger in long after the meal is over.”

Design trends evolve over time. What timeless design principles do you believe will always remain relevant?

I think authenticity will always outlast any trend. Spaces that are built around personal stories, meaningful pieces, and a genuine sense of comfort will never date. I’ve tried to avoid trends. When a space feels collected, layered, and lived-in, it transcends time. Good design, for me, is about creating an emotional connection rather than following what’s current — and that feeling will always be relevant.

At its core, The Edit is about sharing design through the eyes of those who live and breathe it. We’re honoured to begin this series with Simone, and can’t wait to continue the conversation with others who shape the way we live.
