After three decades across architecture, interiors and furniture, John Bastiras, Co-Founder of In Good Company, brings his furniture practice into a new chapter under his own name with Studio Bastiras, a Melbourne studio creating locally designed and manufactured furniture for residential and commercial interiors.

The studio brings an established body of work into a new identity, with a dedicated home at studiobastiras.com, alongside bespoke commissions developed in collaboration with some of Australia's leading architects and interior designers.

Objects of a Life Well Lived

At the heart of Studio Bastiras is a simple idea: objects of a life well lived. Furniture should have a life beyond the moment it is bought, and these are pieces to live with, age with and eventually pass down, beginning the cycle again.

John has long had an eye for furniture with warmth and character, pieces that never take themselves too seriously and are, above all, designed to last. Studio Bastiras brings that sensibility into focus with a collection of locally designed and custom-manufactured pieces, made to become part of the everyday home and workplace.

The Designer: John Bastiras

Studio Bastiras reflects a practice shaped over more than three decades in design. John studied architecture and worked in firms across Adelaide before turning to interiors, and in his early twenties he started a business collecting and restoring mid-century Scandinavian furniture, work that put him inside the craft of the pieces he had grown up admiring.

The pull towards design began earlier still. "As a child, watching my brother, now an architect, build scaled models of buildings certainly has left a mark on me," John has said. "He is the catalyst for my pursuit in design."

Making his way to Melbourne, he went on to spend fifteen years as a lead creative in the furniture industry, and in 2019 founded In Good Company with his wife, Louise. The business has since developed into a distinctive representation of global and Australian design.
